Product of Greece

ONE OF THE BEST GROWING AREAS IN GREECE

Anyone looking for excellent olive oil inevitably ends up in the southwest of the Peloponnese. Messenia is not just a growing region – it is the historical birthplace of the Koroneiki olive. Here, over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, mild winters, and the fresh sea breeze create a microclimate that is unique in the world.

In this terroir, the Koroneiki olive, also known as the queen of olives, unfolds its true strength: it is not an industrially bred variety focused on yield, but rather a cultivated variety thousands of years old, representing "quality over quantity." Its exceptional polyphenol content (natural antioxidants) makes the oil incredibly valuable and resistant to oxidation. This very combination of a perfect location and a distinctive olive variety is the reason why we source our oil exclusively from this region.

Bird Save

Bird protection through traditional craftsmanship

Our partners in Greece rely on traditional craftsmanship rather than industrial efficiency. While elsewhere suction harvesters (often used at night) pose a danger to resting songbirds, the harvest for our oil is carried out exclusively and gently by hand using hand-operated shakers.

Through this conscious selection, we guarantee that no birds are harmed in the Messenian groves. Nature plays into our hands here. The often steep, terraced groves of our growing region hardly allow for the use of huge harvesters anyway. Thus, geographical conditions and our quality standards complement each other perfectly. A respectful approach to nature that you can taste and feel.

HAND-PICKED INSTEAD OF MASS-PRODUCED GOODS

Our close collaboration with select farmers and bottlers in Messenia is based on personal contact. We know the people behind the product and rely on their centuries-old craftsmanship. This direct supply chain, without unnecessary intermediaries, not only secures the livelihoods of small farmers but also guarantees fully traceable quality.

EARLY HARVEST FOR MAXIMUM NUTRIENTS

Our olives are deliberately harvested at the end of October or beginning of November, when they are still green and early ripe. This "early harvest" yields less oil, but guarantees a maximum of healthy polyphenols and antioxidants. You can taste the difference immediately: an intensely fruity aroma of fresh grass, rounded off with a subtle spiciness on the finish.

GENTLE COLD EXTRACTION

To ensure the valuable nutrients of the olives are preserved, every hour counts. The harvest is processed directly, purely mechanically, and under strict controls at temperatures below 27 degrees Celsius. By avoiding heat, we protect the delicate vitamins and subtle aroma – for an oil that goes into the bottle as healthy and natural as when it grew on the tree.

Naturally cloudy bottling

Our olive oil is intentionally not finely filtered. After pressing, the oil is simply left to rest so that any coarse particles settle. The fine suspended particles from the pulp, however, remain. These are important flavor carriers and contribute to a full-bodied, intense aroma. This way, you enjoy the oil exactly as it comes from the press at the mill – pure and unadulterated.

OUR MISSION

At ELJO, we want to turn the olive oil industry upside down with you.
Our goal: A particularly natural, delicious olive oil, just like the Greeks make for themselves. Try it and taste the difference!

About Us

FROM 72 TREES TO ELJO: OUR STORY

Behind ELJO are us: Elias and Johannes. It all started in 2020 when our family bought a small house in the southern Peloponnese – including 0.5 hectares of land and 72 old olive trees. Originally, the oil was only intended for ourselves, but the canisters we brought back for friends were so popular that our own trees soon couldn't keep up with the demand.

That was the starting point for ELJO. To be able to offer this quality consistently and with official organic certification, we now work with select small-scale farmers from our immediate vicinity. They share our philosophy 100%: same region, same care, same authentic taste. This is how we guarantee that every bottle contains the same passion that gripped us during our very first harvest.

OUR PROBLEM WITH CONVENTIONAL OLIVE OIL

The opaque origin of “EU blends”

Many labels in stores state "Blend of oils from the European Union." This allows manufacturers to mix oils of different origins and qualities to create a standardized taste and compensate for price fluctuations. The exact source remains untraceable for the consumer.

Quantity over quality: The use of overripe olives

In industrial production, olives are often harvested until they are completely black and ripe. The reason is purely economic: ripe olives have a significantly higher oil content, thus maximizing yield. However, this focus on quantity comes at the expense of quality. As ripeness increases, the content of valuable secondary plant compounds (such as polyphenols) drops drastically, and the flavor profile loses its characteristic freshness.

Lack of flavor is often sold as "mild".

The term "mild" is often used in marketing to portray a lack of flavor in a positive light. In reality, however, the complete absence of bitter notes and spiciness usually means that the oil is low in secondary plant compounds. These so-called polyphenols are responsible for the health benefits and inevitably produce a slight tingling sensation. A completely mild oil is therefore often an indicator of low biological value or over-processing.

The reckless use of industrial harvesting machines

Intensive agriculture often employs fully automated harvesters that encircle entire rows of trees and mechanically vacuum or knock down the fruit. This method is criticized because it shows little regard for the ecosystem. Since harvesting often takes place at night, birds and other small animals resting in the trees can be caught by the machines. Furthermore, the heavy machinery often leads to long-term soil compaction.
